Artine Artinian

Artine Artinian ( born December 8, 1907 in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria, † November 19, 2005 in Lantana, Florida) was an American linguist and philanthropist.

Life

Artinian migrated as a 13 - year-old teenager through Ellis Iceland to the U.S. and settled in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He learned English and spent three years as class president of his high school class. He studied French literature to 1931 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and later at Harvard University in Boston. At New York's Columbia University, he received his doctorate. Artinian worked part-time at the famous Sing Sing Prison and played the flute for the prison inmates.

For 32 years, was Artinian professor at Bard College in Annandale -on-Hudson, New York. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Artine Artinian was the leading expert for the French author and writer Guy de Maupassant.

After his retirement he devoted himself to various French biographies. He collected many manuscripts and documents from French authors, including unpublished works of Gustave Flaubert and Marcel Proust, which he sold to the University of Texas.

Artinian was appointed an Officer of the French Legion of Honour. He received honorary doctorates from the Appalachian State University ( Appstate ) and Bowdoin College ( 1966). He ran a foundation that supported poor students.

Artine Artinian was in 1936 married to Margaret Woodbridge ( 1911-2005 ), who died on 20 February 2005. Margaret Woodbridge came from a respected U.S. East Coast family.
