Artis Gilmore

Artis Gilmore ( born September 21, 1949 in Chipley, Florida ) is a former American professional basketball player ( position: Center). The 2.18 - meter giant was given the nickname "The A -Train " because of its no-frills, but the dominant style of play. He was known as a workhorse. He once played in 670 consecutive games without even having to expose only a game.

Playing career

He played at Gardner - Webb Junior College in Boiling Springs, North Carolina and at the University of Jacksonville college basketball.

He began his professional career with the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association. He played for the Colonels to the league in 1976 has been set.

  • As a rookie him the rare honor to participate, both the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year was to be crowned.
  • During his ABA career scoring average of 22.3 points and 11.0 rebounds. He played in five ABA All-Star games.

In the so-called ABA Dispersal Draft 1976 he was elected as the first pick of the NBA team Chicago Bulls. He stayed with the Bulls until 1982, which sent him to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Dave Corzine, Mark Olberding and money on July 22, 1982. For the Spurs, he played until 1987. He finished his NBA career with the Boston Celtics in 1988.

  • During his NBA career scoring average of 17.1 points and 10.1 rebounds. He played in six NBA All-Star games.
  • He led the NBA in four times at the field throwing batting average and has to this day the best career batting average NBA history: 59.9 percent.

He then played one season with Bologna Arimo in the Italian league.

  • He scored an average of 12.3 points and 11.0 rebounds and was elected to the European All -Star team.

He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.
