Artur Rother

Artur Rother ( born October 12, 1885 in Stettin, † September 22, 1972 in Aschau im Chiemgau ) was a German conductor.

Life and work

As the son of an organist and music teacher Rother studied with Hugo Kaun. From 1906 he was a coach, choir director and first conductor in Wiesbaden and 1907-1914 assistant at the Bayreuth Festival. From 1927 to 1934 he was Music Director ( GMD) in Dessau. After the " seizure of power" of the Nazis, he joined by his own account in 1933 at the sacrificial ring of the NSDAP.

As of 1934, Rother conductor at the German Opera House Berlin where he was appointed on January 30, 1937 Music Director. In 1941 he edited Mozart's opera Idomeneo and brought the new version, which had been reviewed by Hans Joachim Moser, 1942 premiere. After his replacement by Hans Schmidt- Isserstedt Rother was from 1943 / 44-1958 guest conductor in temporary quarters of 1943 bombed opera house. In addition, he was in 1943 head of the large radio orchestra.

After the end of World War II, he was from 1946 to 1949 in the Soviet zone chief conductor of the Berlin East Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. Subsequently, he was guest conductor of the RIAS Symphony Orchestra and at the Städtische Oper Berlin. Between 1935 and 1964 conducted Rother 41 concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, including in Paris and Spain.
