Arturo Ardao

Arturo Ardao ( born September 27, 1912 6 sector of the department Lavalleja, Uruguay; † 22 September 2003 in Montevideo) was an Uruguayan philosopher, history of ideas historian and journalist.

Ardao received in 1939 a PhD in Law and Social Sciences at the Universidad de la República ( UdelaR ). From 1949 to 1950 he worked there as a professor of sociology at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences and from 1949 to 1974 as such the History of Ideas in America at the faculty of humanities and natural science ( FHC ). In the years 1968 to 1972 he was dean of this latter faculty. In addition, he had by 1963 held the position of Director of the Faculty's Philosophy Institute until 1974. Other teaching assignments he possessed, moreover, at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas (IPA) and at the Instituto Normal Magisterial.

Ardao, the founders and employees of the Marcha was continued throughout the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay in 1976 the Venezuelan exile. There, he taught and conducted research from 1976 to 1978 in Caracas on Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos Rómulo Gallegos as well as at the Universidad Simón Bolívar.

Ardao, who published more than 30 books, was retired in 1989 at the Faculty of law and social science of UdelaR. He also received several awards. He was, for example, the 1987 Gran Premio Nacional for his intellectual work. On the occasion of his 90th birthday was a tribute Ardaos by the Uruguayan Senate.
