Arturo Soria y Mata

Arturo Soria y Mata ( * December 15, 1844 in Madrid, † November 6, 1920 Madrid ) was a Spanish official and transport and urban planners as well as the developer of the so-called linear city model. He planned in the 19th century, the tram of Madrid and was the director of the company.

Life

Arturo Soria y Mata founded in 1875 Madrid's first tram. Soria was known by the development of the linear city, the Ciudad lineal, which he praised as the only logical way of urban development. In 1882 he developed the model of the city, which should respond to the rapid growth of the city in the 70s and 80s of the 19th century. The causes of the problems he saw in the high density and the poor transport infrastructure of the city and stood for decentralization and for a city - country - a balance. Nine years later, Soria Compañía Madrileña de Urbanización (1892 ) to a gigantic project to realize. He planned a 48 kilometer long and 200 meters deep annular structure to Madrid around with a seven- kilometer cross-connection. Because of financial difficulties, only a portion of five kilometers could be realized from the entire project ultimately was based on the rail, tram routes and a boulevard. Soria y Mata concept was later taken up and continued by urban planners in other countries.

  • The Madrid Metro has dedicated his station " estonia Arturo Soria " on line 4.
  • The Madrid City Council has designated the main street of which it intends to Madrid's Ciudad Lineal District after him. In addition, in 1992, erected a statue in his honor on one of the sides of this road.
