Arvernus

Arvernus or Arvernorix is the name of the Roman period Celtic, at best but also the Norse god. In Gallo -Roman times Arvernus was equated with the Roman god Mercury, the god of trade and routes. The French dedicatory inscription from the Puy de Dôme, the main sanctuary of the Arverni, calls him genius.

Mythology

Although his name ( " Arverni ", " Arvernerkönig " ) Gallic with the tribe of the Arverni to be brought into connection, the genius Arvernus dedicated dedicatory inscriptions was until now only two found in their tribal area, namely the Puy de Dôme ( Arverni, Aquitania province ), and in Clermont- Ferrand ( Augustonemetum, Aquitania ) province. All other inscriptions date from the Roman province of Germania Inferior and the Dekumatland. So consecration stones were for Arvernus in Wenau, in Cologne ( Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium ), two in Greifswald ( Gelduba ) and found in the Netherlands in Roermond. The Arvernorix was devoted to a dedicatory inscription in Miltenberg ( Seiopa, province of Germania superior).
