Asaita

Asaita (also Aysaita ) was the capital of the Afar region of Ethiopia. The place is located in the northeastern part of the country, bordering the Danakil Desert. The border with Djibouti is about 50 km away. In the southeast of Asaita are 20 salt lakes. Among the Gamarri, which is known for its flamingos and the Lake Abbe, in which the Awash River flows. The village lies at an altitude of 378 m. The population is assumed to be 20,814 in 2006.

The city Semera, one under construction, planned city, has taken over the role as capital of Afar. This town is situated on the road from Awash to Assab on the Red Sea. Conversely, there is Asaita 50 km away from the street and is only accessible by a gravel road.
