Asamkirche, Munich

The Asam Church ( officially St. - Johann- Nepomuk -Kirche ) in the Sendlingerstraße in Munich's Old Town was built from 1733 to 1746 by the brothers Asam ( Cosmas Damian Asam and Egid Quirin Asam ). It is regarded as one of the most important buildings of the two main representatives of the southern German late Baroque. The church should arise as a chapel of the now resident in Munich Asam brothers originally. After Quirin Asam succeeded Egid 1729-1733 to acquire several properties located next to his home land, he built from 1733 together with his brother Cosmas Damian there, the Church of St. John of Nepomuk.

Architecture

The church was built without order and as a private church to the greater glory of God and the salvation of the builder. This allowed the brothers also to build independent of the ideas of clients. So Quirin Asam Egid could look directly at the high altar through a window of his private house. Although the church was planned as a private church, the brothers had to make it public after public protests. Quirin Asam Egid designed the church for confession as for youth. So it contains seven confessionals with allegorical representations.

The baroque façade is integrated into a row of houses of Sendlingerstraße and vibrates only slightly convex outward.

The church was built in a confined space, the property is just 22 x 8 m. All the more surprising is the performance of the two builders, who succeeded in architecture, painting and sculpture to combine harmoniously in the two-story interior. In particular, the indirect lighting in the choir area is very well done: behind the cornice hidden windows illuminate the Trinity figures effectively from behind. The cornice itself seems to abzuwogen and by its curved guide.

The interior of the church is structured into three vertical sections, which increase in brightness from the bottom up. The lowermost portion of the benches for the church visitors is kept relatively dark and symbolized in the design of the suffering of the world. The second, located about section is white and bluish held and reserved for the emperor. The top section with the indirect and concealed illuminated ceiling painting is dedicated to God and eternity.

During a bombing raid in 1944, the choir was heavily damaged, only with the interior restoration from 1975 to 1983, a hypothetical original appearance of the choir was made after study of the sources.

Facility

On the high altar, there are four pillars as a reference to the four Bernini columns on the grave of Peter in St. Peter's in Rome. Foremost of these is God, the Redeemer. Below the Tabernacle a relic of St. John of Nepomuk is kept. Compared to a usually very strictly structured baroque parish church, the Asam Church because it is a private church some peculiarities on: The Church is gewestet - and not, as usual always faces east, ie the high altar is located in the west. In addition, the opposite the pulpit mounted crucifix is hung too low. In Baroque churches this is higher than the pulpit hanging, so that the preacher must look up to Jesus.
