Asarina

Asarina procumbens

The Gloxinienwinden ( Asarina ) are a genus of flowering plants in the family of the plantain family ( Plantaginaceae ) and include about 16 species. They are native from Mexico to the southwestern United States and in Southern Europe.

Description

Asarina species grow as the most strongly creeping or twining or creeping rare, usually herbaceous plants. The change-constant at least in the upper part leaves are usually triangular, pinnately and pubescent with serrated leaf edge.

The flowers appear singly in the leaf axils. The attractive flowers are hermaphrodite, zygomorphic and fünfzählig with double perianth. The five broad green sepals are fused. The corollas in various sizes, reminds snapdragons. The five petals can be in between white, yellow, pink, purple and shades and are often spotted on the throat. The corolla is two-lipped. There are four stamens present.

The fruit capsules have two equal compartments.

Cultivation

Some varieties are grown in cold climates as an annual plant, but they are perennial in warm climates. They need a warm sheltered spot in cold climates or can be maintained in the greenhouse. They are well suited for the growth of walls and benches. You need in a winter pruning, because they bloom better on new shoots. New varieties are regularly in North America and Europe market. Propagation can be done by sowing and cuttings.

System

The first publication of the genus Asarina took place in 1757 by Philip Miller in The Gardeners Dictionary, 7th edition. As lectotype was by W. R. Barker in B. Morley & H.R. Toelken: Flowering Plants of Australia, 1983, 270 Asarina set procumbens Mill. The genus belongs to the tribe Asarina Antirrhineae in the family Plantaginaceae.
