Asaro Mudmen

The Asaro Mudmen (mud or Lehmmenschen ) are a people from the Eastern Highlands, the Highlands of the Republic of Papua New Guinea. They originate from the area around the provincial capital, Goroka, a city of about 19,000 inhabitants ( 2000 census ).

According to legend, it is said to have taken place so that the Mudmen were inferior in the fight against an enemy tribe and saw itself compelled to seek the protection of the Asaro River. In the name of the river of the Common name Asaro Mudmen returns. Under cover of dusk the defeated warrior wanted to escape. The enemy saw the Mudmen rise from the mud of the river and got to do it with fear, as the body and head were completely caked with mud. It was believed there were ghosts, before which there was great reverence. Out of fear and terror now fled the victorious people and gave way to the final opponent. The Mudmen had won.
