Aschaffenburg–Höchst (Odenwald) railway

The railway line Aschaffenburg - maximum (Odenwald ) was a single-track branch line from Aschaffenburg to Hochst for Odenwaldbahn. Since the railway line ran through the Bachgau, she was also called Bachgaubahn.

History

The 30 km long railway line was built due to a local railway Act of July 12, 1906, as well as a treaty between the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Grand Duchy of Hesse. On 1 May 1911, the commissioning of the first section between Aschaffenburg and South Großostheim followed, 18 months later, on December 1, 1912, the remaining distance after maximum.

1973 approved by the Federal Minister of Transport as part of the conservation measures of the German Federal Railroad decommissioning of Bachgaubahn. On May 25, 1974, the passenger trains were leaving for the last time and the total traffic between Großostheim and New Town was set. In the following weeks and months, the tracks were dismantled on the section between Großostheim and Neustadt and placed under the five-kilometer section of the course between Neustadt and the maximum Bundesbahndirektion Frankfurt. The transport of goods between Neustadt and Sandbach was posted on 1 January 1995 and between Sandbach and maximum of 31 December 1998, the decommissioning and dismantling of the track took place in 1999.

The transport of goods between Aschaffenburg and Nilkheim Großostheim was set on September 28, 1991, the remaining stretch to the port on the Port of Aschaffenburg was operationally converted into a station track. On 11 January 2012, the Federal Railway Authority approved the closure of the railway line Aschaffenburg Aschaffenburg South - Nilkheim on 1 February 2012. However, it is noted that the distance " as a service institution by Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG " will continue to operate. In June 2012, the Bayernhafen Group took over the section from the DB, so the railway linking the port remains secure.

Today's state of the route

In the area of Großostheimer districts Wenigumstadt and Pflaumheim the former railway line is secured under nature conservation law since 1997 as a protected landscape component.

The most striking Kunstbau the route that the place maximum spanning viaduct, still exists and dominates the townscape today. The former locomotive shed in the Peak Station is a residential building today. In the further course are partly to Neustadt still the old tracks. Between Town and grove city the former railway embankment and a bridge can be seen. Also, the station building in Sandbach is used privately.

On the former railway yard in Sandbach now a factory building of Pirelli has been built. On the former railway line now runs a connecting road between the two tire plants.

On the former station site in Neustadt houses and a supermarket were built.

In early 2008, the tracks between the highest viaduct and Sandbach were finally completely removed and replenished the old railway crossings with concrete.

Future

Due to the especially strong in the rush hour traffic tense situation between Aschaffenburg and Großostheim, which leads to travel times of up to 40 minutes in the rush hour, there are in Großostheim and Aschaffenburg efforts to reactivate the Bachgaubahn to Großostheim. For this purpose, an initiative has been launched, which is a non-partisan support. To gauge the demand and to investigate ways of improving transport links to Aschaffenburg, a corresponding report was commissioned by Großostheim and Stadtwerke Aschaffenburg. One of the representatives of the "Alliance Bachgau -Bahn " initially introduced preliminary operational concept provides direct trains over Aschaffenburg in the Rhine -Main area before, with trains from Großostheim would combined at the Aschaffenburg -south railway station with trains of the Main valley train from Miltenberg ( see also: outflanking ). Subsequently, the trains will run together to possible to the Frankfurt Central Station.

In July 2013 plans were known to bind to the Port of Aschaffenburg from the west via the Rhine -Main -Bahn. Such plans should be included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2015. The background is the high utilization of the existing connection via the Main Valley Railway. For this is an electrified connection to be created, which would initially eventually led to the former Bachgaubahntrasse and parallel to the main road 469 to the Rhein- Main- track. Großostheimer politicians see this as a good chance to extend the railway line also to Großostheim because of the planned bypass route only one kilometer route would have to be built up to the edge about. By including in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, the cost would at the same time taken over by the federal government, which most the short branch line to Großostheim would have to be taken over by the municipality, which, however, " then not the problem " was more. In August 2013, also Prime Minister Horst Seehofer said in a campaign rally in Großostheim out for this variant.
