Ashley is a small town in the south of North Dakota on the border of South Dakota and is part of the McIntosh County.

History

The place was named in 1888 after the Milwaukee Railroad executive Ashley Morrow. Since then, now more than 100 years, the church has held on strongly to their German - Russian roots. It has about 775 inhabitants. Almost all the inhabitants of this city, and the surrounding areas have German - Russian ancestors. These are migrated from the Black Sea region, especially from Bessarabia beginning of the 20th century.

Many residents, especially the older generation, talking among themselves today with a German Swabian accent. The city is surrounded by the American prairie, near the Missouri River. In the immediate vicinity of the film was shot, the Dances With Wolves.

Ashley is the administrative seat of McIntosh County to which also, among others, Wishek, Venturia, Cold Lake and Danzig belong latter (Danzig) now a hamlet with only 3 people.

The Near Ashley is ( approximately 5 km west of the city) of farms and the Lake Hoskins, at which it was originally founded surrounded. The local school informed the grades kindergarten to 12th grade. The city is struggling with a high out-migration, especially of the younger generation, and the associated aging of the population, since every other residents over 60 years old.
