Asparagoideae

Asparagus herb of the vegetable garden asparagus or asparagus (Asparagus officinalis)

The subfamily of Asparagoideae belongs to the family of asparagus plants ( Asparagaceae ) within the order of asparagus -like ( Asparagales ). The family includes two genera. It is to be found worldwide. The best known of vegetables asparagus or garden asparagus is (Asparagus officinalis ), some Asparagus species and their varieties are ornamental plants especially for rooms.

Description

There are perennial herbaceous plants or woody plants: shrubs or lianas. In many species the leaves are reduced and the stems take on the task of photosynthesis. The perennial herbaceous species have rhizomes as outlasting. If leaves are present then they are alternate, simple, parallel-veined and entire. Often the leaves are scale-like and membranous. Stipules absent.

The flowers are borne singly or in very differently constructed inflorescences. The small flowers are hermaphrodite or unisexual threefold. If the flowers are unisexual, the plants then monoecious ( monoecious ) or dioecious ( dioecious ) can be getrenntgeschlechtig. There are six equally protean bloom cladding available, their color is green, white or yellow. There are two circles, each with three stamens present; they are among themselves freely but adherent to the base of the bloom. In the hermaphrodite and male flowers all stamens are fertile. The female flowers have staminodes and Septalnektarien. Three carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. The stylus is at most as long as the ovary. Are formed berries.

System

The molecular genetic studies in the last ten years have meant that the family boundaries within the order of asparagus -like ( Asparagales ) have dramatically shifted. So the former extent of the Asparagaceae corresponds s.str. today only a subfamily ( Asparagoideae ) in the family of asparagus plants ( Asparagaceae ). The Asparagoideae were first described in 1837 by Hermann Burmeister in the manual of natural history. Type genus Asparagus is L.

In the subfamily Asparagoideae there are only two genera:

  • Asparagus (Asparagus L.)
  • Hemiphylacus S.Watson: With five species in Mexico.
