Aspazija

Aspazija (actually: .. Elza Pliekšāne, born Rozenberga; * 4 Märzjul / March 16 1865greg in Zaļenieki in Jelgava, † November 5, 1943 in Dubulti ( Jurmala ) ) was a Latvian poet and playwright and the wife of Rainis.

Life

During her studies in Jelgava is Aspazija engaged in various youth organizations. Later she became interested in literature and theater. As a member of the political- literary movement New flow ( Jaunā Strava ), she met one of the leaders of this organization, Jānis Pliekšāns (better known as Rainis ) know, the poet, was a newspaper editor and lawyer at that time. In 1897 they were married and lived for a short time in the Lithuanian Panevezys. Then they moved to Moscow, where they were staying until 1903. After the failure of the 1905 revolution, while in Latvia Rainis played a key role, Rainis and Aspazija Latvia had to leave, they went to Castagnola near Lugano in Switzerland. They lived there until her triumphant return to the newly independent homeland on April 4, 1920. Aspazija was an active member of the feminist movement and joined the Latvian Social Democratic Workers' Party.

Works

Aspazija first works were realistic style, but the largest part of her oeuvre must be described as neuromantisch.
