Assateague Island
Assateague Iceland is an uninhabited island in American Maryland and Virginia. The elongated dune island in the east of the North Atlantic is a 60 km long in north-south direction. The United Nations has Assateague Iceland declared a Biosphere Reserve. The Ministry of Interior of the United States has declared the entire island a National Natural Landmark.
On the island are located marshes, bays, sandy beaches and sandy coves find.
There are three conservation agencies on the island, who are responsible:
- Maryland (both IUCN category V) Iceland Assateague National Seashore
- Assateague State Park (3.2 km ²)
- Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, 57 km ² ( IUCN category IV).
On the island of Assateague wild ponies exist ( Chincoteague ).
The border between the states on the island is marked by a high fence. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department Volunteer Fire Department in Chincoteague (Virginia ) has the largest herd of Chincoteague ponies on the island.
Located on the Virginia Eastern Shore Lighthouse Assateague Lighthouse from the 1830s, with a height of 43 m at the southern end of Assateague Iceland. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
