Atelier 5

The Studio 5 is an architectural partnership founded in 1955 in Bern (Switzerland ) from the five architect Erwin Fritz, Samuel Gerber, Rolf Hesterberg, Hans Hostettler and Alfredo Pini, ventured into the shortly after the founding Niklaus Fritz Morgenthaler and Thormann. The settlement of their 1958-62 realized Halen is known worldwide as a seminal example of the settlement after the Second World War. The prototypical building and the work in the group are essential characteristics of the office. For this, the first striking reference to Le Corbusier and since the establishment of the office continues to this day jobs come with building concrete. Thus, the studio was attributed to 5 in the seventies, the movement of the New Brutalism.

However, this observation remains attached to the surface. The Atelier 5, neither the material concrete fixed, nor to the " maniera à le Corbusier " be shortened. Starting from the basic attitude of the Master, it has risen over time its own complex architectural language that is the starting point of "modernity" obligation and is characterized by practical clarity and the absence of time -related signals (from the postmodernists about the fashion deconstruction to the present " new sensibility ").

In addition to other exemplary residential buildings ( Thalmatt, Ried, Hamburg- Rotherbaum, three royal courts -Mainz ) exemplary solutions emerged in hospital construction (hospital Schwarzburg ), in building in historic surroundings (Official Bern, Justice Centre Potsdam ) with institutional and commercial buildings ( HypoVereinsbank Luxembourg ) as well as in urban work ( port Libben Prague, Erfurt Ringelberg )

Operation

The Studio 5 is work that emerge from the dialogue, for the work in group on an area of the architecture, which today is almost always associated with the notion of the author as the sole instance in the design process. Responsible for the design is one team that an institutionalized criticism of the group must face in his decisions but remains autonomous. There is no architecture by voting. The composition of the team changes from task to task, so that over time, each working with each and each team member and critic. Characteristic of the Atelier 5 are:

  • The critical attitude of the tasks compared to
  • Intensive study of place and context
  • Interest in design and structure
  • The precise determination of the reference between private and communal, public space.
  • The emphasis on fitness for the individual and the community
  • The absence of formal gestures and architectural quotes.

The number of partners in the studio 5 changes. She had been in the 1970s increased to 18. 2010, there are seven, namely the architect Kurt Blum, Gabriel Borter, Peter Breil, Gianni Chini, Giuiseppe Genuise, Heinz Müller and Franco Petterino. As the author of the work but always draws only the studio 5
