Aterno-Pescara

The spring lake

Pescara (Latin: Aternus ) is a river in Italy. The length is 145 km. Navigable river is just at the mouth in the city of Pescara. The river first flows as Aterno to the southeast by the Province of L' Aquila, turns above Popoli to the northeast. Then the Gizio it flows to, from here he is, then Pescara. Here he breaks through the Abruzzo and forms to the Adriatic Sea the boundary between the provinces of Teramo and Chieti.

The " source " with the name " Riserva Naturale delle Sorgenti del Pescara " is on the road to Vitorito around 5 kilometers of Popoli and is equipped as a recreational area with a large car park, children's playground and barbecue area. The somewhat distant actual headwaters even includes a 49 -acre, since 1986, placed under nature protection area of the karst spring with a lake in the dense reed belts, among other things found in the coot, herons and the rare kingfisher protection. It is also the last refuge of the brook lamprey in Italy, but dwindling number of animals from year to year.

The reed was formerly used for commercial purposes. Since it may not be harvested today, the lake getting smaller and the various reeds and reed belt is widening. The area belongs to the largest bird sanctuary of Abruzzo and target various ornithological studies. In this large area, the water in many places comes directly from the mountain slope or from the sandy bottom of the lake.

Large parts of this spring water comes from the in 1600 to 2200 meters in altitude karst plateaus of the Campo Imperatore, the distinctively shaped mountains in the area of the Gran Sasso. The precipitate in the mountains to the source, the surface water and the water needed just below the surface about a month. The low water, by the accident in the tunnel bore at the Grand Sasso one of the underground lakes was drilled stored until it is excreted from 20 to years in different lakes with over 7000 liters per second from the rock.

In summer 2007, the driest in a long time, the source areas led to Popoli little water, or more precisely the source of Callisto with about 1000 liters of water per second, so it came to impairments in the water supply of the cities of Pescara and Chieti. The extent to which the various forest fires, in which sunk after a fighting helicopter will affect the vegetation and therefore on the spring water itself, is not yet known.

Various studies are in preparation as the sometimes devastating fires have ravaged large parts of the park. They could be just kept away from the villages partly very, but some farms and observation huts have been destroyed.

The lake can be entered at only one point and the area kept free only on fenced trails. If hikers encountered outside of these paths, result in a substantial penalties.
