First as Atlanta Stadium referred to it was completed in 1965, to stand by baseball for the relocation of the newly established Atlanta Braves from Milwaukee as a team in the National League in Major League; this move has been delayed due to complaints from Milwaukee for one year, so that the stadium was initially not used adequately. In addition to the Braves still with the Atlanta Falcons (1966 ) was an NFL team and the Atlanta Chiefs (1967 ) located a football (soccer) team based in Atlanta, which fought out their home games in this stadium.

In 1976 the stadium was renamed to commemorate the funding provided by the Fulton County. The last major events in the stadium were the baseball competitions at the Olympic Games in 1996 and three games of the World Series in 1996, the final of the U.S. baseball leagues. The capacity was 1996 52.000 spectators.
