Atlantic is the administrative center of Cass County in the southwest of the U.S. state of Iowa. In 2000, Atlantic had 7,257 inhabitants.

Geography

DeWitt is located at 41 ° 24'05 " north latitude and 95 ° 00'39 " west longitude. The city covers an area of 21.2 km ² which 21.1 km ² land and 0.1 km ² water surface spread.

History

Atlantic was founded in 1868. While historians have not been able to determine the reason for the name Atlantic, there is a local legend that the founder of the city thought Atlantic lie exactly on the half of the distance between the Atlantic and Pacific. Since both names were to choose from, a coin was tossed and the name Atlantic won.

The nearby rock Iceland Railroad was crucial for the further development of the city. Even today, the old railroad depot has been preserved and now serves as a building for the local Chamber of Commerce.
