Atli Heimir Sveinsson

Atli Sveinsson Heimir ( born September 21, 1938 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic composer and conductor.

Life

Atli Sveinsson Heimir was born in Reykjavík and plays since the age of ten piano. Until 1957 he studied at the Academy of Music in Piano Reykjavík Rögnvaldur Sigurjonsson. From 1959 lived Atli Heimir several years in a Catholic convent near Osnabrück.

Later he studied at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Cologne. In 1963 he attended the Darmstadt summer courses, where he among other things, György Ligeti and Olivier Messiaen met. In the following two years he studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Gottfried Michael Koenig. The latter led him to start composing electronic works. He went back to Reykjavík and started his work as a conductor. From 1968 - 1978 he worked as a music teacher at the high school in Reykjavík, since he is a teacher of composition at the Reykjavík College of Music. From 1972 to 1983 he was president of the Association of Icelandic composers. Since 1993 he is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music He is also a producer of the Icelandic broadcasting.
