Attavante degli Attavanti

Attavante degli Attavanti also Gabriello di Vante, llamado Attavante degli Attavanti (* 1452 in Castel Fiorentino, † 1525 in Florence) was an Italian painter.

Life and work

Attavanti was since 1476 in the design of miniature paintings in Bibles, measuring and evangelistaries, antiphonaries and manuscripts of classical authors for the Duke Federigo of Urbino, the Medici, Florence Cathedral and especially for King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary.

He composed his border decorations, head borders, initials, etc., with a great effort of imagination and taste in the spirit of the early Renaissance and gave them by the insertion of reproductions of antique gems, busts, statues, precious stones, and of every animal forms a large picturesque and material stimulus. His main works are:

  • Missal in the library at Brussels ( 1485 /87).
  • Handwriting of Marcianns Capella ( Library of St Mark in Venice).
  • Bible in the library of the Vatican.
  • Bible of seven volumes in Belem monastery in Portugal.

Also, three manuscripts of the Hamiltonian collection in Berlin is attributed. [Note 1]
