Attila Ambrus

Attila Ambrus ( born October 6, 1967 in Fitód at Csíkszereda in Transylvania, Romania) is a Hungarian- Romanian ice hockey goaltender fur smugglers, bank robbers and writer.

Life

During his time as a professional hockey player, he played for Újpesti TE, first as a goalkeeper, and Zambonifahrer Eiswart, and later as a goalkeeper, and for the Ferencvárosi TC. In the 1990s he committed in Budapest, a series of 29 bank robberies that earned him a prey to the value of the equivalent of around 775,000 euros. Due to its habit is to drink courage before a raid at a pub near the crime scene with whiskey, he got from the media soon missed the nickname Whiskey Robber. A growing following transfigured him into a folk hero in the style of Sándor Rózsa or Robin Hood.

Ambrus was passed for the first time in January 1999, but managed to escape almost six months later from prison. After three more raids, the police arrested him in late October 1999 as again. In December 2000, Ambrus was convicted after a six- month process to a 15 - year prison sentence, which he served in the high security prison of Sátoraljaújhely. The sentence was extended on appeal in 2002 to a total of 17 years. Ambrus, however, was dismissed on 31 January 2012 due to good behavior.

Works

During his first imprisonment Ambrus wrote his autobiography Én, a whiskey, which was released after a revision by journalist Judith P. Gál in Budapest in 1999. Meanwhile, it was also translated into English. Through this work, which depicts both the bank robberies, as well as a guide for releases, Ambrus became one of the most widely read writers of the post-communist Hungary.

Was published in 2004 Ambrus ' biography in the United States, the German translation was followed a year later. A film adaptation of the book starring Johnny Depp as Ambrus was allegedly planned.

The Hungarian director György Dobray should begin in April 2010, the film version with the English actor Charlie Cox, which should be completed in October 2010. The movie should start from winter 2010/ 11, but publication was delayed.
