Au (Munich)

The Au is a district in the southeast of Munich river valley and part of the municipality Au Haidhausen, with an area of ​​149.5 hectares and 29,195 inhabitants (as of December 2010).

Location

The Au rechts der Isar extends from the Wittelsbacherbrücke in the south to the Ludwig Bridge to the north. Below the edge of the slope of the Isar shore lies the city's District Lower part of Au ( 88.6 acres, 16,519 inhabitants), above the edge of the slope, the Obere Au ( 61.0 acres, 12 676 inhabitants).

History

The Au is first mentioned on December 12, 1340 as Awe ze Gyesingen. Awe meaning land on the water. Traditionally, the Au was divided into the parts Isar quarter, Sammer quarter, Klafterviertel and creek area.

Even before the secularization in 1806 decreed the Au over 6,000 inhabitants and five churches.
