Aubert of Avranches

Autbert or Aubert of Avranches († June 18 725 in Avranches, Normandy ) was Bishop of Avranches and founder of the abbey of Mont -Saint -Michel.

Aubert drew repeatedly on the rocky tidal island back in time there were two hermitages since the 6th century. According to legend, appeared to him in the year 708 in a vision of the Archangel Michael and asked him to build a chapel on the rocky island. As Aubert paid no attention, the angel had appeared to him again and this time had drilled his finger in his skull. According to the third aspect of the construction was started and inaugurated on 16 October 709. These procured Aubert relics of the Archangel from Monte Sant'Angelo and occupied the church with twelve canons.

After his death, Aubert was buried at his request in the chapel on Mont -Saint -Michel. 1012 were found his bones buried in a new shrine and keeps the head separately. During the French Revolution, the relics were looted and scattered. A pierced skull is today as a relic in the church of St. Gervais in Avranches. He has long been regarded as evidence of a prehistoric trepanation, but actually seems to date from the Middle Ages.

Aubert applicable in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint. His feast day is 10 September.
