Auckland volcanic field

First mapping of the volcanic field by Ferdinand von Hochstetter, 1864

The Auckland volcanic field is located on New Zealand's North Island and has an area of 140 square kilometers. The largest city of New Zealand, Auckland, was built in the existing basalt tuffs and volcanic field. The elliptical volcanic field has in its north-south orientation, a length of 29 kilometers and consists of 50 no longer active maars, cinder cones and Tuffringen.

The first geological mapping work of the area took the Austrian geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter ago in 1858. In this terrain exploration he was accompanied by Māori. He summed up his results in 1862 in a report for Peter 's Geographical messages. They contain a simple topographic map with individual geological notes, dates from 1859. Geological and topographical atlas in the of New Zealand from 1863 this card is provided with surface color and a legend. Hochstetter noted in the Petermanns Geographic releases that 61 separate volcanic eruption locations are marked on the map. He also differed in his commentary on the volcanic rocks and tuffs, olivine basalt lava contained. The volcanic region described Hochstetter as follows: " There are volcanoes in the smallest Maas rod, angle of only 300 to 600 feet above sea level; the highest among them, at the entrance of the Auckland Harbour to Rangitoto uplifting, reached 900 feet. But there are true models of volcanic cones and craters, which offer a wide field of geognostical observation and in Germany yet so often captured Leopold refute thoroughly Buch'sche theory of elevation craters. "

The first eruptions began approximately 60000-140000 years ago. Investigations of the rocks showed that 19 outbreaks occurred in the area of the volcanic field in the last 20,000 years. The most recent eruption about 600 years ago occurred in the area of Rangitoto Island, the island of the same name originated with a diameter of 6 kilometers and several cubic kilometers of lava was ejected.

In recent years, various district administrations in the New Zealand government put a for putting the volcanic field on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage candidate in the country.

One of the volcanoes is the highest natural point of Auckland, the 196 m high Mount Eden.
