August Neilreich

August Neilreich ( born December 12, 1803 in Vienna, † June 1, 1871 ) was an Austrian botanist and lawyer. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Neilr. ". It dealt mainly with the flora in Vienna and Lower Austria. In his research he found numerous plants that were unknown up to his time. Three of them have been named after him: the Eastern Alps - Meier ( Asperula neilreichii ), the Mödlinger spring carnation (. Dianthus plumarius subsp neilreichii ) and now regarded as extinct Neilreich Houseleek ( Jovibarba hirta var neilreichii ). His works are still regarded as a basis for further research. Life

Neilreich fascinated him since his youth for science and it was strongly encouraged by his parents' house. After visiting the Schottengymnasiums 1815 to 1820 he studied law and received his doctorate in 1827. A year later he got a job as a Judgeship in Vienna. Since 1831, he ran next to his profession an intensive autodidactic study of plant life inspired by Karl Ludwig von Kochel and of Enderes and he made ​​contact with the Vienna botanists Stephan Ladislaus finite, Franz Unger, Reißeck and Eduard Fenzl. His 1846 published flora of Vienna, which is based on over 800 excursions and in contrast to previous works by other authors contains detailed descriptions of species and their localities, gained him wide recognition. 1847 promoted to "Civil Court Rath", his development of railway technology has benefited in his excursions. However, his lung was attacked for a long time without this would have been but diagnosed and treated in time. 1856 broke his tuberculosis disease from fully and Neilreich was provided by the physicians given the choice either his profession or abandon the botany: he opted for the latter, looking at early retirement and was forced to retire. After 1862 his health had deteriorated massively, he could barely leave the house. His plans he could not implement to write a flora of Carniola and the littoral. Neil Reich died in 1871 and was buried on Liesinger cemetery, since 1986 there is a grave of honor the city of Vienna.
