Eduard Fenzl

Eduard Fenzl (* February 15, 1808 in Krummnußbaum in Lower Austria, † September 29, 1879 in Vienna ) was an Austrian botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Fenzl ".

Life

From 1825 he studied at the University of Vienna Medical. Already during his studies he was very interested in botany, a tendency that was deepened by acquaintance with the same age botanists August Neilreich, Ludwig Heinrich Wilhelm Schott and Redtenbacher. In 1833 he graduated in medicine with a dissertation on a botanical theme. Until 1836, he was then an assistant at the Chair of Botany at Joseph Franz von Jacquin. From 1840 to 1878 he was curator and director of the botanical Hofkabinetts, 1849-1878 Professor of Botany at the University of Vienna, and in 1849 director of the Botanical Garden of the University. In 1842 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina. Fenzl was a student and in these functions also succeeds Stephan Ladislaus finite. He was a member of numerous associations and played a major role in the development of scientific life in Austria. Gregor Mendel heard the lectures of Fenzl, but fell in 1856 for the teaching exam.

As co-founder of the Vienna Zoological and Botanical Society and the Austrian Alpine Association, whose first Board as he was, he has contributed much to the spread of botanical knowledge.
