August Reuss

August Reuss ( born May 28, 1879 in Vienna, † October 31, 1954 ) was an Austrian pediatrician.

Life

August Reuss was the son of Austrian eye specialist August Leopold von Reuss. Reuss studied at the Vienna University of Medicine, where he received his doctorate in 1903. In 1908 he became an assistant at the University Children's Hospital, 1914 he habilitated. In World War Reuss was regimental surgeon.

He became associate professor in 1924 at the University of Vienna, one year later Board the children's department of the Kaiser Franz Joseph Hospital. 1930 moved Reuss to Graz, where he became a full professor and director of University Children's Hospital. He was, from 1934 medical director of the Vienna Children's Hospital Glanzing.

After his death, Reuss received an honorary dedicated grave in the cemetery Neustift ( group R, Series 6, No. 2). 1959 named to the August- Reuss -Gasse in Vienna Hietzing after him.

Importance

Reuss led improvements in the field of pediatrics one, particularly in the newborn. So he divided from the maternity wards from the general gynecology. He reached the recognition of pediatrics as a separate medical specialty, and thus is considered the first social pediatrician in Austria. Worldwide first he discovered congenital metabolic abnormalities and tried their treatment.

Among his pupils was, inter alia, Hans Czermak.
