Auguste Choisy ( born February 7, 1841 in Vitry -le- François, † September 18, 1909 in Paris) was a French engineer and architectural historian who greatly concerned with the construction of historical buildings. Work

Auguste Choisy, son of an architect, in 1861 attended the École Polytechnique in Paris, at the time Léonce Reynaud taught and led in 1863 to study at the École des Ponts et Chaussées on. Then he undertook as was customary at that time, in order to study as part of his training extended trips to Rome and Athens, the ancient buildings. Unlike many of his predecessors, Choisy far more interested in the construction of historical buildings than for its architectural expression. He looked at the design as the most important element of the architecture. For Him all the style changes were merely the logical consequence of technological developments.

As a result of his studies Choisy published since the Romans inserting to buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome to build in 1873, L'Art de bâtir chez les romains in which he detailed concerned with the manner of construction, construction technology, the work processes and work organization.

The book led to Choisy was proposed by his former professors Léonce Reynaud and Eugène Viollet -le- Duc, to undertake an expedition to similar studies in the Middle East to make Byzantine buildings. This resulted in 1882 Choisys second constructed in the same style work, L'Art de bâtir chez les Byzantins.

Choisys investigations meant that he was later appointed professor at the École des Ponts et Chaussées and also at the École Polytechnique. From his lecture activity eventually resulted his magnum opus in 1899 published Histoire de l'Architecture.

Choisy completed his studies of ancient buildings with further publications on ancient Greece in 1883 published Études sur l'architecture épigraphiques grecque (1883 ) and Egypt in 1904 erschienenenL'Art bâtir de chez les égyptiens

Noteworthy and influential to the new times axonometric projections were consistent with those Choisy illustrated his works and summarizing all the essential elements of a design into a single image with ground plan, elevation and section. The Reyner Banham architectural theorist meant that this objective Illustrations architecture that reducing it is to pure abstraction. A quality which probably contributed in addition to the undeniable value of information that this display was well received by the pioneers of modern architecture.

Among the students Choisys include, inter alia Auguste Perret.
