Augustin Misago

Augustin Misago (* 1943 in Ruvune, Rwanda, † 12 March, 2012 Gikongoro, Rwanda ) was Bishop of Gikongoro.

Life

Augustin Misago received on 25 July 1971, the ordination. He was rector of the seminary in Nyakibanda.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 30 March 1992 to the Bishop of Gikongoro. Jozef Cardinal Tomko, President of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses gave him on 28 June 1992, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Jean -Baptiste Gahamanyi, Bishop of Astrida, and Joseph Ruzindana, Bishop of Byumba. He involved himself in as nyina wa Jambo ( Mother of the Word ) revered holy Virgin in Kibeho.

He was arrested accused of involvement in the genocide in Rwanda and for participating in the murder of 150,000 Tutsis in his diocese in 1999. It was made especially responsible for the murder of 30 students who had allegedly asked him for protection. After 14 months in prison, the court in Kigali acquitted him of the charges.
