Augustine Kandathil

Mar Augustine Kandathil ( born August 25, 1874 in Chempu, Kerala, † 10 January 1956 in Ernakulam, Kerala ) was Archbishop of the Syro -Malabar Archdiocese of Ernakulam.

Life

Mar Augustine Kandathil was ordained a priest on 21 December 1901. On August 29, 1911, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Ernakulam and titular bishop of Arad. He received his episcopal consecration on December 3, 1911, the future Patriarch of Antioch, Ladislaus Zaleski.

After the death of the Vicar Apostolic of Ernakulam, Aloysius Pazheparambil, Mar Augustine Kandathil succeeded him as Vicar Apostolic. With the elevation of Ernakulam Archdiocese for the St. Thomas Day (December 21 ) 1923, he became the first Archbishop of Ernakulam and the first Catholic Indian archbishop of modern times.
