Austin Gatt

Austin Gatt ( born July 29, 1953) is a Maltese politician of the Nationalist Party and long-time minister.

Biography

General Secretary of the Nationalist Party and Member of Parliament

After attending school at the Lyceum of Malta, he studied law at the University of Malta and graduated in 1975 with the Doctorate of Law ( LLD ) from. Following this, he joined as a partner in one of the oldest law firms in Malta.

Entrusted in 1980 the Nationalist Party (PN ) with the construction of an internal party organization, to exclude a possible election fraud in the parliamentary elections in 1981, as adopted in the previous often. In fact, the PN reached a share of 51 percent of the vote in the elections of 1981.

Following was appointed Managing Director of belonging to the PN Independence Print Company Limited, which undertook as a corporation, all commercial activities of the party. In addition, he was head of the legal department of the PN and represented in this function as the counsel Partit Nazzjonalista in a series of constitutional procedures. In 1987 he was again in charge of PN with monitoring the parliamentary elections and appointed after the CEO of Independence Company Limited and Euro Tours Company Limited.

After the victory of PN in the general election in 1987 he was elected to the Congress on February 5, 1988 Secretary General of the Partit Nazzjonalista. This Dr. Gatt was responsible for the entire party organization, and the development of policy positions of the party, who were advised by the Executive Committee and subsequently the Board of Directors of the party. As General Secretary, he pushed for a comprehensive transformation of the political, organizational and commercial structures of the Nationalist Party and was also responsible for the preparation and protection of all party plans for the parliamentary elections in 1992 and 1996.

In the 1996 election Austin Gatt was first elected a deputy of the House of Representatives, where he represented the constituency 1. Between 1996 and 1998 he was opposition spokesman for justice, local government and housing, and also responsible for setting up the television station of the PN. In the parliamentary elections of 1998, 2003 and 2008, he was re-elected as an MP in each case.

Minister

After the electoral victory of the Nationalist Party in September 1998 he was appointed by Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami on 8 September 1998 as Minister of Justice and Local Government in the Cabinet. In this office the introduction of e-government, a comprehensive judicial reform, as well as a reorganization of local government authorities followed.

After the parliamentary election in 2003, he was appointed Minister for Information Technology and Investment of Prime Minister Fenech Adami on 15 April 2003. As such, he was responsible for information and information technology, but also for Air Malta, Gozo Channel Co. Ltd.. , The Sea Malta Co. Ltd.. , Maltacom, the Malta International Airport, Enemalta Corporation, Water Services Corporation, Malta Freeport Corporation, Public Broadcasting Services Ltd. , Malta Drydocks Corporation and Malta investment Management Co. Ltd.. The Office of the Minister for Information Technology and investments he retained even after Lawrence Gonzi in March 2004 as a successor Fenech Adami took over the premiership.

After a cabinet reshuffle, he was 12 March 2008 Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications.
