Austrian Congregation

The Austrian Benedictine Congregation, under the title of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary (Latin: Congregation Austriaca Mariae Virginis Beatae Immaculatae, Ordinis Sancti St. Benedict ) is a monastic congregation, an association of independent Benedictine monasteries. While respecting the autonomy of the individual monasteries, the Congregation wishes to realize the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity in spiritual, human, financial and organizational terms.

History

The Austrian Benedictine Congregation was founded in 1617 and received on 3 August 1625 Apostolic Letter " In supremo Apostolatus solio " of Pope Urban VIII, the papal confirmation, which was renewed in 1630. This " Congregation Austriaca " included all above in Austria and located below the Enns abbeys, namely Melk, Krems Münster, Göttweig, Lambach, Schotten Abbey, Garsten, Altenburg, Mondsee, Seitenstettengasse, Gleink and small - Mariazell. For in the former Archdiocese of Salzburg located abbeys of St. Peter, Admont, Ossiach, St. Paul in Carinthia, Michaelbeuern, St. Veit an der Rott and Seeon the Salzburg Congregation was founded in 1641.

Under Pope Leo XIII. were renewed on August 23, 1889 these two congregations as " Mary " and " Joseph's Congregation ". Pope Pius XI. summarized on 8 December 1930, the Breve "Anno Domini 1888 ", the Austrian abbeys in a single congregation together.

Structure

The highest body of the Austrian Benedictine Congregation, the General Chapter, which meets at least every three years; in him the monasteries are represented respectively by the abbot and an elected delegate. The task of the General Chapter belongs to adapt the rules of monastic life in the appropriate time to create the Constitutions and to choose the Congregational Leadership. The Head ( supremus moderator ) of the Austrian Benedictine Congregation is the Abbot President; at the time of Abbot Christian Haidinger, Altenburg, elected on 18 November 2009. Among the duties of the Abbot President, inter alia, include the leadership of general chapters and Äbtekonferenz, who presided at Abtwahlen, performing the searches, the management of the College of St. Benedict in Salzburg ( study house ). He is assisted by his council elected by the Chapter General, which consists of two abbots and two monk delegates.
