Background

The four years of federal government Vranitzky IV were characterized by an increasingly xenophobic and historical revisionist opposition course of the FPÖ.

After a motion of censure of ÖVP and SPÖ lost Haider 1991, the Office of Carinthia's right, which he has held since 1989. The reason for the no-confidence motion was a statement Haider in a debate on unemployment in the Carinthian parliament on 13 June 1991: "Well, that has not been given in the Third Reich, because in the Third Reich they have made proper employment policy, which is not even your government in Vienna brings together. This must be said again. " (Quoted by Czernin 2000, p 31)

The project initiated by the FPÖ and implemented in January 1993 anti-foreigner referendum " Austria First" was of 416 531 (7.35 % of the electorate ) signed Austrians. In return, attended the January 23, 1993 250000-300000 people at SOS fellow human being organized " sea of lights " in part to protest against the FPÖ referendum. Another consequence of the anti-foreigner referendum was the cleavage of the FPÖ. Heide Schmidt, Klara Motter, Friedhelm Frischenschlager, Hans Helmut Moser and Thomas Barmüller left the party and founded on 4 February 1993 the Liberal Forum, which thus stood for election for the first time.

On 3 December 1993, a series of attacks began with xenophobia. It was not until the end of 1997 the culprit Franz Fuchs could be taken.

After the candidate the last election, Norbert Gugerbauer, had resigned, the Freedom Party nominated again Jörg Haider and campaigned under the text " You are against him because he is for you." This is of interest since almost 15 years later, the identical spell was reused during the Parliamentary elections 2008 from the FPÖ.

The Socialist Party of Austria ( SPÖ), named in 1991 into Social Democratic Party of Austria. The Greens have also changed their party name, since amendments to the Articles in 1993 is her name The Greens - The Green Alternative ( Green ).
