Austrian Society for Railway History

The Austrian Society for Railway History ( ÖGEG ) is an Austrian association that emerged from a group of railway enthusiasts who had gathered around 1971 to maintain the last remaining active steam locomotives at the ÖBB Linz site in their spare time.

History

The foundation of the association in 1974 in Linz, to take over with the aim of one of the previously serviced steam locomotives in their own possession, and to preserve the just set Florianerbahn as a museum railway. In the following years the ÖGEG acquired several discarded by the ÖBB locomotives, of which ÖBB 93.1455 drove to ÖBB tracks as the first in 1978, again under its own power. In the following years the ÖBB further locomotives were worked up in rented premises in the boiler house in Amstetten, some of which were presented in 1987 to mark the 150th anniversary of railways in Austria in vehicle parades in Strasshof near the northern railway vehicle and look to a wider audience.

Already in the 80s succeeded in ÖGEG acquire a locomotive series 142 in Romania. In this series there is a replica of the Romanian license number 214 or 12, the largest and most powerful steam locomotive Austrian construction. It was taken in 1993 again. After the fall of the Iron Curtain many partly well-preserved locomotives were acquired in Eastern Europe, primarily in Romania, but also in the former GDR. Therefore, the association was also criticized because financial resources for several German locomotives without any connection with the railway history of Austria were applied. However, these locomotives were used successfully against commercial special trains. With the phasing out of old locomotives at ÖBB from around the beginning of the 90s the ÖGEG also acquired a number of electric and diesel locomotives.

The historic railway vehicles ÖGEG are now in the ÖBB network, to Austrian private railways and also deployed abroad.

The Florianerbahn has now been spun off from ÖGEG and converted into an independent company.

The ÖGEG now has two separate routes, it operates a 17 km section of the Steyrtalbahn of Steyr local railway station to green castle. The 1982 set oldest Austrian narrow gauge railway with a track width of 760 mm was taken in 1985 as a museum railway again. Today, the stock of Steyrtalbahn has eight steam locomotives.

1995 Trips to the former coal path of WTK ( Wolfsegg Traun Thaler ) of Timelkam were conducted to Ampflwang first time. Then the Ampflwang railway was taken over, it is now the standard gauge heritage railway ÖGEG and the feeder road to the railway museum in Ampflwang.

Since 1995, the ÖGEG is also the owner of the last steam passenger ship of the Austrian Danube shipping, Schönbrunn.

Locomotive pool Ampflwang, Upper Austrian Railway and Mining Museum

The Railway Museum in Ampflwang im Hausruckwald houses the extensive steam locomotive collection of the association. It is located in a former Montana location of the WTK at the end point of the former coal train. In 2005, the Railway Museum Ampflwang was the hub of the former railway operations work Rosenheim and the traverser of the former SGP- work of Vienna - Simmering. In addition, a new roundhouse was built around the turntable. The Railway Museum was the main venue of the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2006 under the motto " coal and steam ."
