DR Class 01.5

The series 01.5 are caused by reconstruction from the DR series 01 express locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR.

History

Since the locomotives of Class 01 were still indispensable in heavy passenger trains, the machines, frames and boiler but were worn, a renewal was necessary. From the year 1962, the RAW Meiningen 35 machines of this series therefore reconstructed. Only locomotives with reinforced brakes were used for this purpose ( from 01 102) and 1000 mm wheelsets As with the rebuilding of the DB.

The renovation included not only the installation of a new boiler, but the entire locomotive has undergone a renovation. The most striking external feature was the abgeschaute of the ČSD series 477.0 through dome cover, which gave the locomotives a modern, sleek look. The large smoke deflectors were replaced by smaller, which were beveled front top.

The new boiler made the so-called Reko -01 to one of the most powerful German express steam locomotives in the postwar period. In addition to a combustion chamber and the known Mischvorwärmeranlage type IfS the 01.5 - boiler with three full-stroke boiler safety valves (type Ackermann, NW 60) was fitted. The machines were Trofimoff sliders and up to 01 501 and 01 520 new cylinder welded construction. In addition, the locomotives also received a new, welded cab in unit design with padded seats, Seitenzugregler and other improvements in working conditions for engineers as well as an inductive magnet. This was necessary for the cross -border traffic to Bebra or Hamburg -Altona and the traffic on the route Dresden- Berlin. Because the Kuppelradsätze had to be replaced in many machines because spokes fractures, eight specimens with Boxpok - wheels made of cast steel, as they were known by locomotives from the Soviet Union and the USA, were provided. Due to manufacturing errors you run not always satisfied and they were later replaced again with new spoked wheels. To conceal the unusual optical wheelsets, the Boxpok locomotives were equipped with a circulation apron. Some wore these even after re Radsätzetausch a while.

From company number 01 519 all locomotives received when converting an oil firing, which allowed a further increase in performance. Up to seven locomotives Bw Berlin Ostbahnhof all other locomotives were later retrofitted with oil firing. The tender was 13.5 m³ of heavy oil are carried. Each of the locomotives was originally two conservation sections ( every 6 years) remain in operation, they have all exceeded. In the wake of the oil crisis of the early 80s all locomotives of the BR were 01.5 off with oil firing. After her retirement from the service operation some locomotives were used as Heizlokomotiven. The 01 0531-2 1984 she received a grate furnace and was then with the number 01 1531-1 as tradition locomotive back in the operational roster of DR 01 519 in 1990-91 was worked by a stationary heating system back to a fully operational locomotive. It was sold to Switzerland in 1991. In 1996, the locomotive of the railroad train friends Zoller was purchased and is currently being worked up after a long shut- in Rottweil. You should go back into operation in 2014.

Accidents

01 of 516 back then with the EDP number 01 1516-2, acquired by the boiler explosion in Bitterfeld notoriety when, on November 27, 1977 zerknallte her boiler in its train due to lack of water. This was the most recent boiler explosion in Germany. Such a misfortune seemed actually even then as unimaginable as the technical condition was monitored by reliable boilers and was believed to be able to trust that the appropriately trained staff - in their own interest - noted the relevant safety regulations.

Through a test drive with experienced personnel was tried in the spring of 1978 to determine the cause of the accident. The unpublished study report of the DR revealed that the scheduled train driver was at the time on a retraining for E -Lok leader and was replaced by a very dedicated engineer. Since the heater with his trunk drivers made a good team, the situation was unusual for him, and brought lack of communication to the lack of water at the entrance to the Bitterfeld Train Station.

On the further use of steam locomotives in the GDR the accident had no effect.
