Austvågøy

Austvågøy is both the largest and easternmost island in the Lofotenkette. It is divided into two municipalities. The northeastern part is administered by the municipality located in Vesterålen Hadsel, while the western and larger part is the community Vågan.

On Austvågøy is also Svolvær with the largest and only city in the island chain. In the southeast the Vestfjord the idyllic and ancient fishing village Kabelvåg lies with the Lofotenmuseum. Another well-known fishing village Henningsvær in the southwest. The European route 10 extends through the middle of the island from east to west, which is separated in the east of the Raftsund with the famous Trollfjord from the neighboring island Hinnøya. The western Gimsøystraumen is the Sound, which thus separates the island of Gimsøy and from the rest of the archipelago. Both Sunde be crossed by bridges since the 90s.

Geography

Also located on Austvågøy with Higravstinden ( 1146 m), Svartsundtindan (1050 m) and Trolltindan ( 1045 m), the three highest peaks of the island chain, the landmark Vågakallen ( 942 m ), in which romantic lies in its archipelago fishing Henningsvær the most climbed and is best known.
