Avco World Trophy

The Avco World Trophy was the championship trophy of the National Hockey League World Hockey Association ( 1972-1979 ). The naming rights of the Cup were sold to Avco Corporation. The trophy was influenced by pre-existing ice hockey trophies and was more or less a copy of them. They never reached the meaning or the emotions with which the counterpart of the National Hockey League was connected, and certainly not the decades- long history and prestige of the Stanley Cup.

Fame of the cup at most by his abstinence. So he was not yet completed at the end of the first season in 1973 and the players of the newly minted champion New England Whalers had to celebrate their championship without a trophy.

1972 Avco Corporation donated the trophy to the WHA, along with an estimated 500,000 dollars. The WHA was thus the only major sports league in North America, the Cup was the name of a private company. There are a total of three Avco World Trophies. In addition to the one that is on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame, there are two more in Nova Scotia and Winnipeg. After switching off the WHA in 1979, no further more trophy was awarded. Hockey legend Bobby Hull led his Winnipeg Jets to a total of three championships, Gordie Howe, one of the best players of all time, the Houston Aeros to two championship titles.

The trophy was designed by Frank Bonner head of Boise, who was awarded the contract to design, after he had set up the house of Avco Board.
