Ave maris stella
In the words of Ave Maris Stella ( " Star of the Sea, Hail " ) begins a Latin hymn that is sung at Marian feasts in the Liturgy of the Hours of the Catholic church for vespers. The text of the hymn is handed down since the 8th century. Its author is unknown.
Use
Due to its frequent occurrence in the Liturgy of the Hours, the melody of the hymn in the Middle Ages was especially popular and has been used by many composers as the basis of other compositions. The original has been attributed to various composers, including Venantius Fortunatus.
In the Catholic hymnal praise of God the hymn in point 520 ( GLalt 596) is printed, I greet a German -language song paraphrase " Star of the Sea you. O Mary, help. " Can be found at number 524 in the old praise of God from 1975 there is also a German translation under number 578 Another paraphrase of the 19th century under the title " star in the seas of life " known.
Ave Maris Stella is the anthem of the Acadian community in Canada. The song begins and ends include with the first verse of the Latin prayer which three verses in French ( " Acadie ma patrie ").
