Avelar is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit Ansiao. 2139 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

The Roman Road of Conímbriga after Sellium (today Tomar ) led by the church today Avelar.

The first mention of the present town in 1137th King Manuel I gave Avelar 1514 city rights and raised the place to Vila. 1836 lost the place again this status and was annexed to the county of Figueiró dos Vinhos. Since 1895 Avelar belongs to the district Ansiao.

In 1995, the city again to today's Vila ( town ) has been charged.

Culture and sights

In the municipality of 1712 are built, community oven, the church Igreja de Avelar Paroquial ( Igreja do Espírito Santo also ) from the 18th century, and the whipping post ( Pelourinho ), with the 1,514 awarded city rights were displayed.
