Avi Cohen

Avraham "Avi " Cohen ( born November 14, 1956 in Cairo, Egypt, † December 28, 2010 Tel Aviv ) was a nationally prominent Israeli soccer player.

Career

Cohen began his career at Maccabi Tel Aviv, before he was transferred in 1979 for a transfer fee of £ 200,000 to England for Liverpool FC. In 1980, he was with the Reds won the English championship and the year after winning the European Cup of Champions. There, however, the defender could not prevail permanently and returned to his home to Maccabi. 1987 Cohen was by Graeme Souness, a former teammate of Liverpool's times, who now worked as manager at Rangers, committed to Scotland. He remained but a short time and went to Maccabi Netanya, where he also finished his career.

Cohen also played for the national team. First, he represented his country at the Olympic Games in 1976 against Guatemala on July 19, 1976. The first official international match for the A selection was made in a 1-0 away win against Greece on 22 September of the same year. Overall, he played in 52 matches for his country, thereby pass him three goals.

1979 Avi Cohen was also voted Footballer of the Year of Israel. Cohen died following a motorcycle accident.

Others

Cohen's son Tamir Cohen is also a professional football player. Like his father, he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv (2002 to 2007).
