Avize

Avize is a small French town in the Marne in the Champagne- Ardenne region. It lies about 32 km south of Reims and 25 km west of Chalons-en -Champagne. Avize is known for its vineyards and wineries for the production of high quality champagne. Avize has 1755 inhabitants, who are called Avizois (as of 1 January 2011).

History

The origins of the settlement are in the early history of which the La Haute Borne announces called menhir. Gauls and Romans built there an observation post. In the Middle Ages the city was temporarily attached. An economic boom experienced Avize since the mid-18th century, when the champagne method was developed for the production of sparkling wine. Previously, the wines of Avize were considered acidic.

Location and varieties

The community Avize belongs to the region of the Côte des Blancs Champagne wine region. Their 268 acres of vineyards are classified as Grand Cru. They are oriented east to east-southeast and are 110-230 meters above sea level. Against cool and moist westerly winds protects the above location Bois d' Avize.

The subsoil consists of chalk, which has excellent capabilities for moisture management. Since the material is very porous, it can absorb large amounts of excess rainwater. The capillary action in turn ensures an adequate water supply even in dry summers. On the Côte des Blancs, the chalk soil is particularly weak eroded. The middle of the slope provides the best conditions.

Large owners in Avize are the houses of Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Louis Roederer, Duval- Leroy, Pol Roger and to Pernod Ricard and Mumm Perrier belonging -Jouet.
