Avord

Avord is a commune with 2765 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Cher in the Centre region. It belongs to the canton of Baugy and the Local Government Association, Communauté de communes de la Septaine.

Geography

Avord is located in Berry on the Yèvre, 20 kilometers southeast of Bourges and 7.8 kilometers southwest from the cantonal capital Baugy, between the neighboring communities of Farges -en- Septaine in the northwest and Jussy -Champagne in the south.

History

In old documents Avord was still called "Before " (1064 ), in 1123 it was already " Avor " 1219 " Avorz ", then " avour " ( 1409 ) and since 1507 " Avord ".

2006, Avord seven times as many inhabitants as 1793., The population increased by leaps and bounds 1931-1936, and 1946-1954 on.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided by a horizontal white ( silver ) wave beams. In the upper part can be seen on the in a circle a lamb is shown with flag on a blue background a Greek cross. The Greek cross is also found in the gable of the church. The lamb in the arms, however, has not only religious references but at the same time reminiscent of the days of sheep farmers. In the lower green field two golden wings are shown that indicate the Air Force base near the village.

Culture and sights

  • The Romanesque church of Saint -Hugues dates from the 12th century and is classified as a monument historique ( classé MH). In it there is a also classified as a monument historique bell 1530.
  • Avord is with two flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris ( National Council of flowery towns and villages ) represented. The " flowers " are awarded as part of a regional competition, a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Economy and infrastructure

An important industry in Avord is agriculture, especially the cultivation of cereals. In 1900, there were still many sheep farmers in Avord, but they are still virtually disappeared.

In the northwest of the community, partly due to the the nearby town of Farges -en- Septaine, is the base aérienne 702 Avord, the second largest airbase of the French Air Force.

The train station of Avord is on the electrified railway line from Vierzon to Saincaize, leg of the call Nantes - Lyon, and is served by the railway company TER Centre.

Twinning

Since 1977 is twinned with Aindling in Bavaria, since 2009 with the Belgian municipality Beauvechain.

Personalities

On the airbase was born in 1880 as the daughter of a captain Catez Élisabeth, later a Carmelite nun and mystic Elizabeth of the Trinity ( Élisabeth de la Trinité, 1880-1906 ).
