Awash-Nationalpark

The Awash National Park is one of the national parks in Ethiopia. It was founded in 1969 and has an area of approximately 756 km ².

Location

The national park is located at the southern tip of the Afar region, 225 kilometers east of Addis Ababa. The nearest major town is Awash, which lies to the east of the park. In the south of the National Park borders the River Awash and the Basaka Lake. The road from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa divides the park in the southern Illala - Saha - level and the northern Kidu Valley. The park is dominated by the volcano Fantale, which reaches a height of 2,007 meters and thus protrudes far from the average lying about 900 meters above sea level landscape.

Climate

Temperatures in the park are very hot reach more than 40 degrees Celsius. At night it cools down to temperatures between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius. The rainy season falls in the period from February to August; it covered an average of 619 mm of precipitation

Animals and Plants

The landscape is dominated by acacia woodland and grassland. In the higher Kidu Valley are surrounded by palm groves hot springs.

The wildlife of the park reflects the prevailing over large parts of the year drought. For those based here wildlife species include the Beisa antelope Sömmerringgazelle, the Great and Lesser kudu, waterbuck and Eritrea 's Dik-dik, reedbuck and aardvark. In the mountainous areas can also Klipspringer encounter. Zebras are to be found mainly in the west of Fantale. An ape species of Anubis and Hamadryas baboon, and black-and- white colobus are observed. At predators Cheetah, serval, caracal and leopard occur.
