Aydar Lake

Unintentionally artificially incurred lake

The Aydarkol (also Aydarkul, Aidarkul; Cyrillic Айдаркўл ) is incurred by man made lake in Uzbekistan in the south-eastern Kyzyl Kum. The largest part of the lake lies in the province Jizzax, the westernmost part in the province of Navoi. This lake is part of the 4000 km ² large Aydar - Arnasay - lake system, to which in addition to the Aydarkol the lakes Arnasoy and Tuzkon count. All of these are brackish water lakes and unintended by- product of Soviet planning.

Until the mid-20th century the lowlands of Arnasoy spent most of the year, a dry salt pan. Only in the spring, the small Tuzkan lake could form which quickly evaporated as the temperatures rise again.

In the early 1960s, the Syr Darya River was dammed and built at the same time the irrigation dam Tschardarja, which was provided with locks to be able to control flooding. 1969 these had to be opened during a flood disaster, since the capacity of the dam was not suitable to control the water masses. Thus, nearly 60 percent of the average annual runoff of the Syr Darya (21 km ³ ) of Tschardarja reservoir were derived from Arnasay lowlands from February 1969 until February 1970. Thus, unplanned formed some new lakes.

Since 1969, the waters of the Syr Darya Aydarkol is regularly fed, if it would exceed the capacity of Tschardarja reservoir. Thus, the natural depression in the course of time, which gave rise to ( for the remains of the Aral Sea ) is the second largest lake in the region is filled.

In 2005, the volume of the Aydarkol was about 44.3 km ³, its surface reaches a length of nearly 250 kilometers and a width of up to 15 kilometers about 3000 km ². The mineralization of the lake water is only an average of 2000 ppm.

In Aydarkol numerous fish species were exposed, such as pike, bream, catfish, carp, asp, Sichlinge and Channa argus. Between 1994 and 2001, the catch of the resulting lake fishing industry was annually 760-2000 tons of fish. In addition to the typical of the Kyzyl Kum fauna can be found at Aydarkol various water birds which migrate here from the Aral Sea.

The lake is located off of inhabited localities; about 345 families or 1760 people are currently living near the Aydarkol. This quiet location and the opportunities for fishing, camel rides and yurt stays in the region are the tourist attractions of the lake.
