Ayizan

Ayizan is a spirit or a saint ( called Loa ) in the African and Caribbean religion of Voodoo. Particularly widespread is the belief in them in Haiti. Other names for it are Grande Ai- Zan, Aizan, or Ayizan Velekete.

Function

She is the patroness of the market, trade and the priesthood. As one of the basic Loa it is associated with the initiation ceremony of voodoo, the Kanzo. She drinks ( ie one you bring ) no alcohol and is the wife of Loa Loco. The usual sacrifice that is offered to her, is a cock.

Christianity

Through the syncretism between Christianity and Voodoo she was equated with the Catholic Saint Clare.
