The National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan ( Ref.: Azərbaycan Milli Elmlər Akademiyası; s: . National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan ( ANAS ) ) is a state Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

History

The Academy was founded in 1945 in Baku by the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR. Precursor was the " Azerbaijani society for scientific research and studies ", which was affiliated with the State University of Baku and later the Russian Academy of Sciences. Founding members of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences were among others the composer Üzeyir Hacıbəyov and the poet Samad Vurgun.

Organization

The Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences is divided into five departments:

  • Physics, mathematics and technical sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Biology
  • Humanities and Social Sciences

Over 30 different academic institutions are located in Baku and in Ganja, Şəki and Lənkəran.

The Academy has 57 full members and 104 associate members. Members shall be admitted by choice.
