Babasaheb Bhosale

Babasaheb Bhosale Anantrao ( born January 15, 1921 in Satara, Bombay, † October 6, 2007 in Mumbai, Maharashtra ) was an Indian politician. January 21, 1982 to February 1, 1983, he was Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Life and career

Bhosale was (then Bombay Presidency ) born in Satara in western Maharashtra. As a student he was active since 1939 in the Indian freedom movement, from 1941 to 1942 he was imprisoned for one and a half years. Bhosale studied law and practiced after his exam in 1951 for ten years as a barrister in his hometown.

In 1980 he was first elected to Parliament from Maharashtra. On 21 January 1982 it certain Indira Gandhi in a surprise coup successor of Abdul Rehman Antulay in the office of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. To his Cabinet of Ministers included the later State President Pratibha Patil and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh and Union Minister. Bhosales tenure was characterized by its community-based activities; he led in Maharashtra a free education for girls up to class ten, taught pensions for a freedom fighter. At the termination of a police strike in the state he broke against the opposition of his party comrades to the police union; in the Vithoba temple in Pandharpur he abolished the priestly system, the source of harassment of many believers was. His term is referred to by his political opponents as " strange interlude " because Bhosale was known for his witty one-liners for trailers and opponents. His tenure ended after little more than a year, on 1 February 1983 and was succeeded by Vasantdada Patil.

Babasaheb Bhosale died on October 6, 2007, 86 years after a short illness in a Mumbai hospital. He was cremated with a state ceremony.
