Băbeni

Băbeni is a small town in the district of Vâlcea in Wallachia region of Romania.

Location

Băbeni is located in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians, to the right of the river Olt. The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is located about 20 km northeast.

History

In the area of the city remains of settlements from the La Tène period and the time of the Roman Empire have been found by archaeologists.

Băbeni is first mentioned in 1491, when the village was a gift from a feudal to the nearby monastery Bistrita.

2001, a referendum was held in which the citizens Băbenis spoke out strongly in favor of a transformation of their community in a city. A year later, the Romanian Parliament agreed to this request and stated Băbeni to the city.

The main industries are agriculture, wood processing, trade and production of crude oil.

Population

1930 about 2,700 residents were registered on the territory of the present town, of which, the rest described themselves as Roma than 200 Romanians. As of the 2002 census, 9,475 inhabitants were registered in the city, including 8,977 Romanians and 107 Roma.

Traffic

Băbeni is on the running in the valley of the Olt railway line between Piatra Olt and Râmnicu Vâlcea. Along these lines, a quick service and commuter trains several times a day.
