Babes in Toyland (Band)
Babes in Toyland was a riot grrrl band that was founded in 1988 in Minneapolis.
Band History
Kat Bjelland, band founder, guitarist, singer and songwriter who (later in the band Hole) and Jennifer Finch ( L7 later ) founded earlier with Courtney Love, the band Sugar Baby Doll, was born on December 9, 1963 in San Francisco. Babes in Toyland was, after Sugar Baby Doll because of quarrels between Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland dissolved, with Kat Courtney had several times previously kicked out of the band, from Kat Bjelland, Lori Barbero and Michelle Leon on drums on bass. However, Babes in Toyland broke up too, but survived longer than Hole. Kat Bjelland then founded a new band called Katastrophy Wife.
Style
The music of the Babes was a bit different than the typical riot grrrl music such as Bikini Kill or Bratmobile. The striking drums, some unusually harsh guitar riffs ( with some grunge influences ), the aggressive vocals of Kat and the angry lyrics combined with innocent doll dresses outfits and the attitude of punk were stylistic device with which the band the concerns of Riot Grrrl movement expressed in their own way.
